The Power of Focusing on a Single Problem

There is immense value in honing in on a specific problem.

Recently, I was challenged to narrow down and get crystal clear on the exact problem I help my customers solve. Although this exercise was initially frustrating, it turned out to be one of the most eye-opening and clarifying experiences for me.

During this process, I made a couple of missteps. I found myself stating things that fell into one of two categories:

  • The pain that the problem was causing.

  • The benefit of the solution.

While these are great points for marketing, they don't narrow our focus in the same way identifying the core problem does.

Getting clear on the primary problem we solve allows us to achieve two critical things:

  1. Create An Exceptional Solution: We can push ourselves and our teams to provide the best solution to the problem, whether in our city, state, country, or the world.

  2. Highlight Impact of Our Team: We can better connect and value team members' roles with the problem they are helping us solve for our clients.

The final answer for me wasn’t fancy or full of the jargon that I often find myself using. It does speak though to the problem that causes leaders major problems.

The Problem I Solve: Small business leaders lack a simple, quick, and easy way to communicate the ownership they want their team members to take in their positions.

What is the narrow problem that your business or organization is focusing on?
